English Reading Workshop

During the short-term summer education program, we brought English picture books to elementary schools to guide students in reading. In the reading workshops, students paired up with a classmate as a reading buddy. They had the opportunity to choose their favorite books from a variety of picture books and engage in approximately 30 minutes of quiet reading. If students encountered unfamiliar vocabulary, their reading buddies and volunteers provided assistance. Volunteers also interacted regularly with each pair of students, inquiring about their understanding of the books.

We observed a significant increase in students' confidence in English. Contrary to our initial assumption that students lacked interest in reading, the activity revealed that students were actually very interested in reading. However, due to difficulties in understanding grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation, they struggled to comprehend the content of the books. To support students in reading, it became evident that teaching them these fundamental language skills was necessary.
